Picasso is in Seattle!

Dec 5, 2010 by

For the first time in its history, the Musee National Picasso from Paris, France is releasing its major works for exhibition around the world.  Seattle is one of only 3 US cities who are being honored with the event.  More than 150 pieces which span Picasso’s 80 years of work are currently on display at the Seattle Art Museum.

Picasso was able to transcend the standard boundaries of artists and move throughout various mediums during his long and prosperous career.  Whether it was his sketches, sculpture, cubist drawings or his more political works, he was recognized and praised for each.

Visitors to SAM are able to view Picasso’s works with 12 galleries housing pieces from of his art over a certain phase of his life.  Picasso’s personal life certainly influences his art and it can be seen as you move through the galleries. From ”Weeping Woman” to his  ”Head of a Bull” sculpture, the artist was not afraid to experiment and collaborate with others to express his ideas.   Although one of his most famous pieces, “Guernica” is only viewed through photographs of the production process, the images are still worth seeing.

Enjoy Picasso at SAM through January 17th, 2011!

New Basque Cultural Card Game-Zer Gara Gu?

Nov 28, 2010 by

Bilbaino, Gotzon Barrueta, has created a new Basque cultural card game called “Zer gara gu? Nor gara gu?” (“What are we? Who are we”; also a reference to a well know song children’s song)  Barrueta’s game is a question and answer card game directed at children and young adults covering a variety of cultural topics including Basque arts, sports, traditions, geography and language.

Barrueta’ inspiration for the game came from a recognition that his very own children were not aware of  aspects of Basque heritage and culture that his generation deemed important.  Knowing that the best way to teach is by making things exciting and fun Barrueta looked for a game that might tap this niche. When Barrueta could not find such a a game he created his own.

The game  is basically a card game and can be played stand  alone with just the 54 cards deck although it includes six counters and a board. From it’s basic description it makes this author think of some Basque variant of trivial pursuit. Oh, how the pink triangle (Entertainment) plagues me every time I sit down!

Distributed by Elkar the Board game can be had for 29.95 euros.  Shipping and handling to the US are likely to be extra (and don’t forget the exchange rate)!

The game author can be reached for questionsa or comments: Gotzon Barrueta, barrueta@eitb.com

New Book Examines the Anthropological Aspect of Basque Political Parties

Nov 28, 2010 by

BOOK PUBLICATION DATE: November 2010     Contact: Barbara Berlin

Politics, Culture, and Sociability in the bberlin@unpress.nevada.edu

Basque Nationalist Party 775-682-7395

by Roland Vazquez                                             www.unpress.nevada.edu

cloth / 978-0-87417-822-7 / $39.95

296 pages

“Roland Vazquez’s book is a most original, important, and interesting work on Basque politics and society. There are few studies in political anthropology that combine fieldwork, participant observation, and library research so well.”  — Juan Linz, Sterling Professor Emeritus of Political and Social Sciences, Yale University

Until now, social scientists studying Spanish politics have focused on party systems, regime transition, and election analysis, and anthropologists studying Spain have largely neglected its political parties.

This book is a pathbreaking work of political anthropology and an ethnographic study of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV). Author Roland Vazquez studies Basque nationalism as not merely a political phenomenon but as a cultural and social one as well. The result is a vivid portrait of political life in the contemporary Basque Country, of the tensions between various nationalist parties and philosophies, and of the way politics are influenced by Basque notions of community, social connections, and national identity. The book also serves as a model for studies of other political and nationalist movements and the cultural and social ties and values that drive them.

Roland Vazquez is associate professor of social sciences and anthropology at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa.
